Low-Tech Casting with Cheryl Jacobs
Join guest instructor Cheryl Jacobs for an exciting two-day workshop exploring accessible and traditional casting techniques—cuttlefish casting and sand casting!
What You'll Learn
Over two immersive 6-hour sessions, you’ll create two unique metal pieces using methods that require minimal equipment—perfect for those looking to continue casting at home.
-
Day 1: Cuttlefish Casting
Learn how to carve a design into natural cuttlefish bone and pour molten metal to create organic, textured jewelry pieces in silver. -
Day 2: Sand Casting
Experiment with sand casting by first carving a design in wax, then creating a mold and casting your piece in brass.
Throughout the workshop, you’ll explore:
✔️ The fundamentals of metal pouring and molten metal handling
✔️ How to create detailed textures and patterns with cuttlefish bone
✔️ The step-by-step sand casting process, from wax model to finished metal piece
✔️ Tips for refining, cleaning, and finishing your cast creations
By the end of the weekend, you'll leave with two beautiful cast jewelry pieces—one in silver and one in brass—and the skills to continue experimenting with these traditional techniques on your own!
No prior experience is necessary, making this a fantastic opportunity to learn hands-on casting in a supportive and creative environment.
